La pandemia de COVID-19 ha puesto de manifiesto en toda su crudeza cómo, a consecuencia de la marginación, la discriminación y la violencia, las personas de la comunidad LGBTIQ+ todavía figuran entre las más rezagadas, según la Alta Comisionada de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos, Michelle Bachelet.
Cada 17 de mayo se celebra el Día Internacional contra la Homofobia, Transfobia y la Biofobia para denunciar la discriminación de la cual son objeto todas las personas con preferencias sexuales diferentes a las convencionales como es el caso de los homosexuales, los transexuales, los bisexuales y las lesbianas en todo el mundo.

La Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en el año 2004, proclamó esa fecha en conmemoración del día en que se eliminó la homosexualidad de la clasificación internacional de enfermedades mentales por la Asamblea General de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) 14 años antes (1990) .
“Juntos: ¡resistiendo, apoyando, sanando!, fue el tema de la campaña elegida para este 2021, en una clara referencia al contexto actual de recuperación de la pandemia de COVID-19. La campaña para 2020 fue “Rompiendo el silencio”, un lema que trató de alzar la voz para que las personas no tengan que ocultar nunca su condición sexual.
